Program Eligibility

For the purposes of the Tuition Support Program, the following applies:

A student applying for Tuition Support for the first time is eligible to be approved if the student:

  1. is a student with special needs (for the purpose of this support, special needs means a student with ADHD, ASD or LD as diagnosed by a licensed physician or registered psychologist or candidate-registered psychologist. The above professionals must have expertise and training in making these diagnoses);

  2. has secured a placement in a designated special education private school for the 2009-2010 school year. [The current designated special education private schools are Bridgeway Academy, Churchill Academy and Landmark East];

  3. is a student who has previously studied in a public school in the Province of Nova Scotia for at least 1 school year;

  4. has received for the 2008-2009 school year educational programs and services by a public school under an individualized program plan established in accordance with policies made by the Minister;

  5. has confirmation from the designated special education private school that he or she will receive individualized programs and services to meet the student's special needs; and

  6. offers a written rationale explaining how the programs and services to be provided by the designated special education private school will positively affect the student's academic and behaviourial well-being.

Tuition Support funding is provided to a designated special education private school for a student with special needs who meets the eligibility criteria and is approved pursuant to the Regulations under the Education Act.

A funding unit is calculated as the average per student allocation to school boards as determined by the Minister. For 2009-2010, the funding will be $6,600.

The funding provides tuition support for one year with an option to renew for an additional three years.

Applicants should use the Tuition Support Renewal Application Form which indicates the supporting documentation required (a letter of acceptance and an IPP from the designated private school for 2009-2010, and a letter outlining the rationale for continuing for a further year at the private school).

Students who are successful in receiving a tuition support grant for 2009-2010 may be eligible for an additional supplementary grant in the amount of $6,600 or 90 percent of actual tuition, whichever is lesser.

There is an on-line estimator on the web site at http://tuitionsupport.ednet.ns.ca/estimator.php. Application forms for the supplement will be included in the letter approving the tuition support grant.
